The festive season is arguably one of the best times to be in Cape Town. The weather is perfect, the atmosphere electric, and there are dozens of activities on the go throughout the city. Here are 7 unique ways to spend the festive season in Cape Town this December:

Cape Town Summer Market in the Company’s Garden

The Cape Town Summer Market returns to the Company’s Gardens, with a few tweaks to make it extra special and more accessible.

This year you can expect a memorable, local and diverse market. The layout will fit in with the beautiful setting of the Company’s Garden, and the focus will be on locally produced goods, with a nice mix of international products as well. At the same time, there will be a range of prices at the various traders that will cater for a wide selection of tastes and pockets.

It’s bound to be a fun way to get into the festive spirit, whether you’re looking to pick up gifts or simply soak up the atmosphere of this unique green heart of the Mother City.

The market runs from 19 to 22 December and is open from 12pm to 8pm on the weekdays, and 10am to 8pm on the Saturday and Sunday. For more information, visit the Cape Town Partnership Website.

Visit Father Christmas at the Cableway

There are few better places to meet with Father Christmas than at Table Mountain. And this year, Father Christmas will be returning to the Cableway with the Christmas Fairy to help add to the festivities and pose for your festive photos. The two characters will be at the Cableway on 24 and 25 December from 11am to 1pm.

The Cableway also offers the perfect Christmas gift for lovers of the mountain, in the form of the Cable Card. The Cable Card gives the recipient year-round access to the mountain via the Cableway. Visitors can travel to the once per day for an entire year, and will also be entitled to discounts at the Table Mountain Café and Shop at the Top. For more information, visit the Table Mountain Cableway website.

And if you’re looking for a festive meal with the ultimate view, the Table Mountain Café is the perfect location for a Christmas lunch. The chefs at the Table Mountain Café will be cooking up a two-course Christmas meal of roast leg of lamb and Yorkshire pudding, with toffee pudding with custard, and much more. You’re unlikely to find a more dramatic location to celebrate with friends and family!

Discover Festivities at the V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is a fantastic place to spend the festive season with events taking place throughout December.

With such a wide selection of shops, it makes perfect sense to head to the V&A Waterfront to do your last minute Christmas shopping. And if you’re not a fan of wrapping your gifts, leave it to the experts in the Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre and Watershed who will do it for a nominal fee, that all goes towards a local charity.

The Cape Town Comedy Club will be open 7 days a week during the festive season, excluding Christmas Day, and there will be special Christmas lunch shows on select days throughout December.

If you are looking for musical festivities, then make sure you visit the Waterfront on 22 and 23 December for the Festive Choirs. The Mitchell’s Plain Crusaders Christmas Band will be there on the 22nd, and the Salvation Army Brass Band on the 23rd.

The legendary V&A Waterfront New Year’s Eve party takes on a different format this year. Entrance is free, and this year’s festival style party takes place across the property at five different zones, so don’t forget your walking shoes. You can look forward to music from Chad Saaiman and Jimmy Nevis, carnival floats, fireworks, hidden surprises, performances by the Zip Zap Circus, and a selection of food trucks to keep you well fed.

Carols by Candlelight and New Year’s Eve Concert at Kirstenbosch

Carols by Candlelight at Kirstenbosch has become one of the most popular ways to spend the festive season in Cape Town. For more than 20 years, the Rotary Club of Kirstenbosch has hosted this event, and 2015 looks to be better than ever. The concerts take place on select dates throughout the festive season, and you can expect to see the Cape Town Concert Brass Band and the Cape Town Male Voice Choir in action. The Kirstenbosch New Year’s Eve party is also legendary, and there are few better ways to ring in the New Year than with a live performance in these beautiful surroundings. This year, Jeremy Loops and Grassy Spark will perform right through until midnight. Tickets are also available via Webtickets.

Festive Lunch at Groot Constantia

The truth is that Groot Constantia is a festive place throughout the year, given the award-winning wine and two top restaurants. But there’s something special about the estate at this time of year. The blue skies and large oaks offer the perfect setting to sit back with a luxurious lunch at Jonkershuis. Or, if casual festivities are more your thing, pick up a deluxe picnic from Simon’s and find a quiet spot on the green lawns to enjoy it. Groot Constantia is open throughout the festive season, apart from Christmas Day.

Celebrate in the Natural Beauty of Cape Point

Cape Point is one of the most popular destinations in the Cape at this time of year. There is something about the natural beauty and tranquility of this spectacular nature reserve that will put your entire year into perspective, and set the tone for the year ahead.

Cape Point is open throughout the year, but be sure to get there early on the public holidays. Many people plan ahead and book a table at the Two Oceans Restaurant, where panoramic views and delectable food are always available. Or, for a less traditional Christmas celebration, why not take a funicular ride up to the old lighthouse, and then picnic at Bortjiesrif or Buffelsbay with the family?
