If you were lucky enough to attend the World Travel Marketing Africa last week, or you had your eyes on social media, you may have noticed the big news that the Cape Town Big 6 has expanded to the Cape Town Big 7. The Cape Town inner city plays a very vital role in local tourism, and the new Cape Town Big 7 member City Walk provides you with the perfect way to explore it.

City Walk fills a perfect gap between other Big 7 members Cape Point, Kirstenbosch, Groot Constantia, Table Mountain, Robben Island and V&A Waterfront, and it aims to create a fascinating storytelling route that starts in the Company’s Gardens, moves down St George’s Mall, and continues up the Fan Walk.

The long-term focus will be to open the city centre up to both locals and visitors, and permanent way-finding signs will direct you along the route. A physical map available at several CBD locations (and online here) will also outline the route, and it will take you past a wide range of cultural attractions, architectural marvels and historical landmarks.

City Walk organisers will also plan special events on certain Saturdays throughout the year, and the first City Walk Saturday kicked off last Saturday. It served as the perfect taster of what’s to come from this new Big 7 member. There was Capoeira, swing dance and tango sessions, jumping castles and story telling for the kids, and a special tranquillity zone with yoga and meditation. Sound Project provided sound effects to onlookers, and puppets, mime artists and a street studio by Here Be Dragons entertained onlookers along the route.

The next City Walk Saturday events will take place on the 16th of May and 20th of June from 10am to 2pm. Take a look at the City Walk page on the new Big 7 website, and like us on Facebook and Instagram to stay in the loop.
