City Walk

First Thursday

First Thursdays Cape Town is a free cultural experience where art galleries and other cultural attractions in the central and East city districts stay open late on the first Thursday of every month. The night is as much about experiencing art and culture as it is about exploring the city on foot. We suggest browsing the highlights right here and choosing a few exhibitions and attractions that you’d like to see, but be open to letting the night take its own course. Print maps are available at most listed venues.

Mother City Queer Project

For over two decades, the Mother City Queer Project (MCQP) has been painting the town red… and orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet! The theme of the party changes each year – in 2015 it was Candyland – and figuring out what you’re going to wear is half the fun. Well, maybe not half the fun; after all, this is a party that stretches out over eight music areas and offers up over a hundred international DJs, artists and performers. Roughly 9000 partygoers attend each year, so if you don’t get your hands on a ticket, FOMO is inevitable.

Date: 16 December | Time: 20:00 | Venue: Castle of Good Hope | Tickets: www.quicket.co.za

Festival of lights

Every December, Adderley Street in Cape Town is lit up by hundreds of festive lights. While you can go and check out the lights any night during the festive season, it’s worth making the effort to get to the official turning-on of the lights, which usually happens on the first Sunday of December, when Adderley Street plays host to a huge free street party.

There are stalls lining the street selling everything from food to Christmas gifts, and a live concert kicks off mid-afternoon. When the sun sets, the mayor officially turns on the lights, and Adderley Street—Cape Town’s historic main road—is lit up by colourful lights depicting some of the city’s history as well as Christmas themes.
